Soul Sickness

'God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives: who will wipe this blood off us? What water is there for us to clean ourselves? What festivals of atonement, what sacred games shall we have to invent? Is not the greatness of this deed too great for us? Must we ourselves not become gods simply to appear worthy of it?'

Friedrich Nietzsche, The Gay Science

Part One

For, Behold, The Kingdom of God is Within You

Primitive Christians, the Essenes, fully realised and taught the great truth that Christ was a substance, an oil or ointment contained especially in the Spinal Cord, consequently in all parts of the body, as every nerve in the body is directly or indirectly connected with the wonderful 'River that flows out of Eden [the upper brain] to water the garden.'

The early Christians knew that the Scriptures, whether written in ancient Hebrew or the Greek, were allegories, parables or fables based on the human body 'fearfully and wonderfully made.'

These adepts knew that the secretion [gray matter—creative] that issues, [secretes] from the cerebrum, was the source and cause of the physical expression called man; and they knew that the 'River of Jordan' was symbolised in the spinal cord and that the 'Dead Sea' was used to symbolise the Sacred Plexus at the base of the spinal column where the Jordan [spinal cord] ends, typifying the entrance of Jordan into the Dead Sea.

The thick, oily and salty substance composing the Sacral Plexus, 'Cauda Equina,' [tail of the horse] may be likened unto crude Petroleum, [Petra, mineral, or salt, and oleum - Latin for oil] and the thinner substance, oil or ointment in spinal cord, maybe compared with coal oil; and when this oil is carried up and crosses the Ida and Pingala [two fluid nerves that end in a cross in medulla oblongata where it contacts the cerebellum [Golgotha —the place of the skull] - this fluid is refined, as coal oil is refined, to produce gasoline - a higher rate of motion that causes the ascension of the airship.

When the oil [ointment] is crucified - [to crucify means to increase in power a thousand fold - not to kill] it remains two days and a half, [the moon's period in a sign] in the tomb [cerebellum] and on the third day ascends to the Pineal Gland that connects the cerebellum with the Optic Thalmus, the Central Eyein the Throne of God that is the chamber overtopped by the hollow [hallowed] caused by the curve of the cerebrum [the 'MostHigh' of the body] which is the 'Temple of the Living God' the living, vital substance which is a precipitation of the 'Breath of Life' breathed into man - therefore the 'Holy [whole] Ghost' or breath. The Pineal Gland is the 'Pinnacle of the Temple.' The modus operandi by which the oil of the spinal cord reaches the Pineal Gland is described in Part II.

'There is no name under Heaven whereby ye may be saved except Jesus Christed and then crucified' [correct rendering of the Greek text].

Every twenty-eight and one-half days, when the moon is in the sign of the zodiac that the sun was in at the birth of the native, there is a seed or Psycho - Physical germ born in the or out of, the Solar Plexus [the Manger] and this seed is taken up by the nerves or branches of the Pneumo gastric nerve, and becomes the 'Fruit of the Tree of Life,' or the 'Tree of good and evil' - viz: good if saved and 'cast upon the waters' [circulation] to reach the Pineal Gland; and evil if eaten or consumed in sexual expression on physical plane, or by alcoholic drinks, or gluttony that causes ferment - acid and even alcohol in intestinal tract - thus - 'No drunkard can inherit the Kingdom of Heaven' for acids and alcohol cut, or chemically split, the oil that unites with the mineral salts in the body and thus produces the monthly seed.

The cerebellum is heart shaped and called the heart in Greek - thus 'As a man thinketh in his heart so is he.'

The bodily organ that men in their ignorance call heart is termed divider or pump in Greek and Hebrew. Our blood divider is not the button that we touch when we think, but it is the upper lobe of cerebellum that vibrates thought. The lower lobe is the animal [mortal] lobe that governs the animal world - that section of the body below the Solar Plexus, called lower Egypt - natural body - kingdom of earth - Appollyon- the Devil [lived, spelled backward] Satan [Saturn governs the bowels], etc.

Fire and Brimstone [the lake of fire] comes from the fact that sulphur [brimstone] is the prime factor in generating the rate of motion called heat, and overeating develops a surplus of sulphur.

The Seed, born every twenty-eight and one-half days, making 13 in 365 days, that is 13 months, remains two and one-half days in Bethlehem [house of bread], then is carried up Pneumo [or vagus] gastric nerve amd across the medulla oblongata and enters the cerebellum to remain two and one-half days, thus - 'When Jesus was about twelve He appeared in the Temple teaching the doctors.'

From the age of twelve to thirty in the life of Jesus nothing is recorded, for twelve refers to puberty, and 30 or 3 means physical, mental and spiritual, viz: body, [flesh or soul] fluids and Spirit [the Ego].

Breath is translated 'soul' over 500 times in the Bible, therefore soul is precipitated air [spirit] which may be lost in physical desire and expression [waste or sin, viz: to fall short] or saved by Regeneration. So, at the age of 30, Jesus, the seed, began to preach to body, soul and spirit, and as the seed was (or is) descending the spinal cord, the substance of which is symbolized by a formula of characters I. O. H. N. [as we symbolise water by H²O] it was baptised of John [not hy John].

Baptize is from the Greek Bapto, the effect of two chemicals when they unite and produce force that neither possessed singly. Here the seed, immersed in the oil, John, was so increased in power that 'The Spirit of God descended like a dove and a voice out of Heaven said, 'This is my beloved son'.

As this seed consumes its force every twenty-eight and one-half days and another [born first] comes out of the Solar Plexus [Bethlehem], we see why he was [is] a 'Sacrifice for our sins'; also we see that, as this seed, taking on the Christ oil, is enabled to reach the pineal gland and cause it to vibrate at a rate that heals all manner of diseases - that the statement 'The blood of Christ cleanseth from all sin' or deficiencies viz : falling short of substance is, literally true.[1]

The Anti-Christ

During the first 300 years of the Christian era all that has been above written was understood by the real Christians, and about the end of that time the persecution of these Essenes by the priesthood became so marked that they met in secret and always made the sign of the fish.

About the year 325, Constantine, the pagan Roman Emperor, a monster in human form, like Nero, and the beast of August, 1914, called the degenerate teachers of Christianity together at Nicea. Constantine murdered his mother and boiled his wife in oil because they still held to the original doctrines of the Essenes. Constantine was told by the Priests of his time that there was no forgiveness for crimes such as his, except through a long series of incarnations; but the anti-Christ sought to concoct a plan by which he hoped to cheat the Cosmic law.

And so it came to pass, after months of wrangling and fighting over the writings of the primitive Christians who clothed the wonders of the human body in oriental imagery, that the council, sometimes by a bare majority vote, decided which of the manuscripts were the 'Word of God' and which were not.

The very important point in the minds of those ignorant priests - whether or no an angel had wings - was decided in favor of wings by three majority. The minority contended that, as Jacob let down a ladder for angels to descend and ascend upon it was prima facie evidence that angels do not have wings. Just think, for a moment, upon the colossal ignorance of these priests who did not know that Jacob in Hebrew means 'heel catcher' or circle, and that ladder referred to the influence of the signs of the zodiac upon the earth;

But now we come to the anti-Christ.

The council of Nicea, dominated by Constantine, voted that the symbols of the human body were persons; that Jesus was a certain historical man, a contention utterly and indubitably without foundation, in fact, and that all who believed [?] the story would be saved and forgiven here, and now. The idea appealed to the monster Constantine as an easy way out of his troubled mind and so the scheme of salvation by the actual blood of a real man or god was engrafted in the world.

Constantine and his dupes saw that the only way to perpetuate the infamy was to keep the world in ignorance of the operation of the Cosmic Law, so they changed 'Times and seasons.'

The date that they made the sun enter Aries was March 21st. Why? March 21st should be the first day of Aries, the head, April 19th should be the first day of Taurus, the neck, and so on through the twelve signs ; but these designing schemers knew that by thus suppressing the truth the people might come to realize what was meant by 'The heavens declare the glory of God.' Again: the moon, in its monthly round of 28½ days enters the outer stars [or suns] of a constellation two and one-half days before it enters the central suns of the constellations that are known as the Signs of the Zodiac or the 'Circle of Beasts.' But even unto this day the whole anti-Christ world [so-called 'Christian'] except the astrologers, go by almanacs that make the moon enter a sign of the zodiac two and one-half days before it does enter it and thus perpetuate the lie of the pagan Constantine, the anti-Christ.

The Greek and Hebrew texts of our Scriptures plainly teach that Jesus and Christ, John and baptism, crucifixion and ascension, the triumph of the Ego over the 'Enemy death' are in the substance and potentialities of the body; and that these fluids can and will save the physical body if conserved and not consumed [or wasted] in sexual or animal desire.

All of whatever name or religious denomination who teach a contrary doctrine agree with Constantine who appeared in the 'Latter days' of the Pure Christian Practice.

Who is the anti-Christ? Look at a world of ruins. Does a good tree bring forth evil fruit? The so-called teachers of, and believers in Christianity believe as Constantine and his priests, that Christ is 'out in the desert' of the Judean hills - out on Calvary. Do they ever look for the meaning of Calvary in Greek? Calvary means a skull, and Golgotha - the place of the skull, exactly where the seed is crucified.

One-half of the combatants in the world's Armageddon have been praying, as Constantine prayed, 'for God's help for Christ's sake.' The other half pray to the same imaginary God and Christ out in 'The desert' of their own ignorance for 'peace and victory.'

Return and come unto the God and Christ within you, oh! ye deluded ones, and the bugles will all sing truce along the iron front of war and the 'Ransomed of the Lord will return to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their faces.' [1]

'For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and time to pluck up what is planted . . .'

Ecclesiastes 3:1-2

In order to determine the framework upon which the Christian conspirators hung their myths, in fact, we will need to turn to that ancient body of knowledge which in almost every culture has been considered sacred and which the priests have wished to keep to themselves: the science of astrology.

The Christian masses, of course, are repeatedly taught to reject all forms of 'astrology' or 'star-gazing' as the 'work of the Devil,' and any number of biblical texts are held up to assert that astrology is an 'evil' to be avoided at all costs. This animosity towards studying the heavenly bodies and their interrelationships is in reality propaganda designed to prevent people from finding out the truth about the Bible, which is that it is loaded with astrological imagery, as evidenced by the fact that the Hebrew gods were in large part celestial bodies. The Bible is, in actuality, basically an astrotheological text, a reflection of what has been occurring in the heavens for millennia, localized and historicized on Earth. This fact is further confirmed by numerous biblical passages concerning the influences of the heavenly bodies, but it also becomes clear through exegesis of the texts from an informed perspective.

Although the Catholic Church has feverishly discouraged star-gazing by its flock - so frightened in fact were the people of the Church’s wrath in regard to astrology that sailors would not look up at the stars, a habit crucial to their occupation - the truth is that the Church has been a longtime practitioner of astrology. Many of the Church hierarchy have not only 'looked to the stars' but have been regular, secret adepts of the same 'magical arts' widely practiced by Pagans but publicly condemned by Christians, and it would be safe to assume that this practice continues to this day behind the scenes. Numerous churches and cathedrals, such as Notre Dame in Paris, have abundant astrological symbols, full zodiacs, etc. In the 19th century the papal throne, St. Peter’s chair, was cleaned, only to reveal upon it the 12 labors of Hercules, who, as we have seen, was a sun god.

Despite its outward vilification by the clergy, astrology has also been used by countless kings and heads of state privy to the astrological, as opposed to literal, nature of the Bible. Not being thus privy, biblical literalists claim that everything in the Bible occurred literally and factually upon the earth, including the talking snake, Noah’s ark, the parting of the Red Sea, the raising of the dead and numerous other incredible miracles that apparently occurred only to the biblical people at that time in that part of the world.

The miraculous and implausible exploits of other cultures, however, are to be tossed aside as being unhistorical, mythological and downright ridiculous. As we have seen and will continue to see, these other cultures had the identical stories as those found in the Bible; therefore, following the 'logic' of biblical proponents, we should also toss out the Judeo-Christian versions as 'merely' mythological and allegorical at best, and diabolical at worst. As history, these various biblical tales are no more factual than the stories of the Greek gods or the Arabian knights. As allegory, however, they record an ancient wisdom that goes back well beyond the founding of the Hebrew nation, into the deepest mists of time.

In ascertaining the astrology of the Bible we should first properly define the word astrology. Although many people think astrology is meaningless mumbojumbo, it is not merely casting horoscopes but is in fact a science, as 'astrology' means the study of the celestial bodies [astronomy] and their influences on each other and on life on Earth. The only difference between the well-respected astronomy and the vilified astrology is that astronomy charts the movements and constitution of the celestial bodies, while astrology attempts to determine their interrelationships and meaning. The sacred science of astrology began with astronomy, when humans noticed that they could determine some regularity in life by observing the skies and heavenly bodies, both nighttime and daytime.

They could thus predict the seasons, including the time of planting and harvest, as well as the annual flooding of the Nile, for example. They also noticed the sun’s effects on plants, as well as the moon’s waxing and waning and effect on the tides. The knowledge of the heavens was also essential in seafaring, as stated, and a variety of ancient peoples were extraordinary seafarers for millennia, an impossible feat without a precise and detailed knowledge of the heavens, which in turn was not possible without the understanding that the earth was round and revolved around the sun, crucial information suppressed by the conspirators, to be seemingly rediscovered late in history. Such information, however, has always been known by those behind the scenes.

Thus, in reading the stars, humans could make sense of the universe and find lessons applicable to daily life. Higgins explains:

'Among all the ancient nations of the world, the opinion was universal that the planetary bodies were the disposers of the affairs of men. Christians who believe in Transubstantiation, and that their priests have an unlimited power to forgive sins, may affect to despise those who have held that opinion . . . ; but their contempt is not becoming, it is absurd. . . . It was thought that the future fortunes of every man might be known, from a proper consideration of the state of the planets at the moment of his birth. . . . This produced the utmost exertion of human ingenuity to discover the exact length of the periods of the planetary motions: that is, in other words, to perfect the science of astronomy. In the course of the proceedings it was discovered, or believed to be discovered, that the motions of the planets were liable to certain aberrations, which it was thought would bring on ruin to the whole system, at some future day.'

As time went on, this science became increasingly complicated, as the infinite stars were factored in and as the heavens changed. Recognising the interaction between the planetary bodies and their influence on Earth, the ancients began to give the heavens shape and form, persona and attitude. In order to pass along this detailed information, which was, and continues to be, so important to all aspects of life, the ancients personified the heavenly bodies and wove stories about their 'exploits,' giving them unique personalities and temperaments that reflected their particular movements and other qualities, such as color and size. These stories were passed down over the many millennia basically by a priesthood, because they were esteemed for their sacred astronomical, astrological and mathematical value.

These celestial movements and/or the revered stories about them were recorded in stone all over the world, in great monuments and in city layouts. These monuments constitute much of our proof that the ancients possessed this amazingly intricate knowledge, but we can also find enormous evidence of it in the legends and writings of the ancients, including the JudeoChristian bible, which is rife with symbolism and allegory.

Other early Christians also knew about the allegorical nature of the Bible, but their later counterparts began in earnest the profitable push for utter historicisation, obliterating millennia of human study and knowledge, and propelling the Western world into an appalling Dark Age. St. Athanasius, bishop and patriarch of Alexandria, was not only aware of the allegorical nature of biblical texts, but he “admonishes us that ‘Should we understand sacred writ according to the letter, we should fall into the most enormous blasphemies.’ In other words, it is a sin to take the Bible literally!

Thus, it is understood that there is allegory and symbolism in the Bible. What is also understood is that, despite protestations to the contrary, the stars, sun and moon are described and utilized repeatedly within an allegorical or astrological context by biblical writers. In fact, in examining biblical texts closely, we further discover that various places and persons, portrayed as actual, historical entities, are in fact allegory for the heavens and planetary bodies. ‘The reason why so little inclination to spirituality is to be discerned in Christian civilisation is that acknowledgment of the Spirit was declared heretical by the 8th Ecumenical Council in the year 869.'

The year 869 is an important milestone for the contemporary worldview [2], because it made official - by decree - the abolition of the spirit on Earth by the fourth council of the Catholic Church, held in Constantinople. Trichotomy, the definition of man as body, soul and Spirit, was then declared heretical.

[2] A worldview is the set of beliefs about the world at large, that a person or society uses as the basis for its functioning and position in life and the cosmos, and which forms the foundation for decisions and actions. Because of this it therefore has a moral impact. One can use the metaphor or compass or a gyroscope with a map, used for navigating life and helping to decide how to steer and where to go; Rudolf Steiner. Worldview

The impact was incisive and profound, given the predominant influence of the Roman catholic church in Europe and across the world for over more than 1100 years, this has influenced and changed the contemporary worldview and prepared the ground for the materialistic culture and worldview based on mineral science [3]. The reason why so little inclination to spirituality is to be discerned in Christian civilisation is that acknowledgment of the Spirit was declared heretical by the 8th Ecumenical Council in the year 869.

[3] The term 'mineral science' is used as a respectful term for contemporary mainstream 'material([istic]' science that focuses on the purely sensory aspects of physical reality, specifically the workings of the mineral element and scientific thinking, and this mainly since the new forms of thinking in the 15th century;

This has had a major influence on how Man sees himself: a physical being in a body on the planet Earth which is just a 'speck' in the huge universe, rather than Man as a spirit and the crown of creation and the central goal for the solar system evolution and Man's development into the Tenth spiritual hierarchy. [4][5]

[4] 869
[5] Man is interwoven with this mission of the earth, in order that he may bring about this balance between thought, feeling, and will, first of all in his own inner being. At the beginning of the earth period man was indeed in this respect an inharmonious fabric of thought, feeling, and will. Everyone who possesses a little self-knowledge can feel that the inner balance of present-day man is not yet complete but is still in a state of disharmony and disorder. Man is called upon first of all to bring about an equilibrium between thought, feeling and will within himself, by means of which he can from within radiate and carry over on to the earth what this equilibrium between thought, feeling and will signifies.

In occult symbolism this mission of the earth has always been expressed in quite a special way by means of a geometrical figure. If you go through all geometrical figures, you will find none which so exactly corresponds to this balance of the three activities as the equilateral triangle. If you merely draw it, you will find the three sides equal, the three angles equal, each angle is equidistant from the others and all are equidistant from the centre. The centre of the equilateral triangle is an absolute symbol of a balance of forces, so that when the occultist looks at an equilateral triangle, he can see in it a symbol of the absolutely balanced co-operation of those elements which, in the three earlier incarnations of our earth, had each for a while, the upper hand. The deeds of the ‘I’ in man signify nothing else than the creating of an active centre in his nature, whereby this state of equilibrium can be prepared from within. So that man is indeed called to something great upon the earth, namely, to bring about from within, first of all through his whole being, a balance between what formerly, for a time, was dominant in various ways and at various times.

That is in the first place a very abstract definition of our Earth-mission, but it consists in just what I have said. The secret of this mission is expressed in the fact that through this co-operation, through this equilibrium of the three forces, the inner being actually produces something new. A fourth element is thus really added to the three preceding ones, and this fourth is the element of Love. Love can only develop in the world when an absolute equilibrium comes about between the three forces which in earlier ages were each in turn the ruling power; Rudolf Steiner [April 18, 1909]. The Spiritual Hierarchies GA 110. Lecture X, Düsseldorf,

'...astrology was so connected with religion that it was impossible to separate them.'

Godfrey Higgins, Esq

And Then Along Comes Mary

For centuries, mother goddesses had held a special place of honor and veneration among those that practiced idolatry and witchcraft. The Great Mother Goddess was viewed as the source of all life. The Egyptian goddess Rhea was called Mother of the Gods, and the Sumerian's worshipped the goddess Inanna, which literally translates as Queen of Heaven.

But whether she was called Isis, Ishtar, Aphrodite, Athena, Rhiannon, or any one of the other names she is known by, they all had one thing in common ñ she was worshipped and adored by man as the supreme goddess. However, since this was a new religion, a new name had to be given to the ancient goddess. It had to be someone associated with the Christ, that all of the attributes connected to the Mother goddess could be infused with. Who else other than Mary, the name of the woman that had given birth to the Lord?

It wasn't until after Constantine established his form of false Christianity, that Mary began to be seen as something more than she actually was. Up until that time she was never viewed as the Mother of God or the Queen of Heaven.

[6] Loraine Boettner [1962] Roman Catholicism, p. 135

'The early church knew nothing about the cult of Mary as it is practiced today - and here we use the word 'cult'  in the dictionary sense of 'the veneration or worship of a person or thing; extravagant homage.' [6]

Loraine Boettner

In 432 AD the Roman Catholic Church made the declaration that Mary was indeed the Mother of God and the Queen of Heaven. For a very specific reason, Ephesus, Turkey was chosen as the site for this announcement. This was where the Temple dedicated to Diana, the Mother of the Gods and Queen of Heaven stood. The Pagan goddess was going to get an extreme makeover. She was going to become the queen of false Christianity.

But this was in itself nothing new. It was not uncommon in ancient times for conquering nations to usurp the gods of the vanquished with their own deities. Because the Pagans of the land already worshipped the mother goddess with such vitality and dedication, converting them to Mary, the new goddess, would not be that difficult.

According to official Roman teaching, the Blessed Virgin has appeared many times over the centuries since the crucifixion of Christ. Whenever these apparitions occurred, only a certain number of people saw and heard her. Except for a cloth that contains the image of Guadalupe, the statues and artwork of the Virgin used today are based on the descriptions of those individuals.

All of these visitations have these two things in common:

First, the Blessed Virgin demanded that the faithful pray the Rosary, or the Rosary was being recited when the vision was seen. Second, the Lady commanded that chapels or temples be built on the site where the apparition appeared.

When the temples were completed, the icon was blessed and crowned. Then a procession of great magnitude and fanfare would place the statue of that particular Blessed Virgin on the site. The icon of the Blessed Virgin is hoisted upon men's shoulders and paraded before the people. The faithful recite the Rosary as the image of the Virgin passes by.

These processions are re-enacted every year on the feast days assigned to that representation of the Virgin. This procession is led by an altar boy carrying the magic wafer in a golden monstrance. Each year millions of faithful Catholics make pilgrimages to these holy temples in the hopes of obtaining a miracle, or getting their request granted from the Holy Mother. These pilgrimages oft times come with a high price in the way of suffering for those that make the trek.

'And now in Babylon you will see borne upon menís shoulders gods of silver and gold and wood, which cast fear upon the pagans. Take care that you yourselves do not imitate their alien example and stand in fear of them when you see the crowd before them and behind worshipping them.'

Baruch 6:3-5

When the Blessed Virgin appeared in Lourdes, one of her admonitions was: 'Penance, penance, penance.' Penance is defined as 'An ecclesiastical punishment imposed for sin; or voluntary suffering as an expression of penitence' and is one of the foundational doctrines of the Catholic Church. This doctrine has caused some of the most devout followers of the Roman Institution to go to extremes in practicing penance. This particular aspect of penance is called 'mortification,' and is believed to assist in a person's salvation. These modes of penance include whipping, wearing chains or a belt of thorns worn snugly around the waist and other such things.

This practice is in direct conflict with scripture! 'For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.' [Ephesians 2:8-9].

Peace, Peace [82]

The 'Age of Reason'

I believe in one God, and no more; and I hope for happiness beyond this life.

I believe the equality of man, and I believe that religious duties consist in doing justice, loving mercy, and endeavoring to make our fellowcreatures happy.

But, lest it should be supposed that I believe many other things in addition to these, I shall, in the progress of this work, declare the things I do not believe, and my reasons for not believing them.

I do not believe in the creed professed by the Jewish church, by the Roman church, by the Greek church, by the Turkish church, by the Protestant church, nor by any church that I know of. My own mind is my own church.

All national institutions of churches, whether Jewish, Christian, or Turkish, appear to me no other than human inventions set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolise power and profit.

I do not mean by this declaration to condemn those who believe otherwise; they have the same right to their belief as I have to mine. But it is necessary to the happiness of man, that he be mentally faithful to himself. Infidelity does not consist in believing, or in disbelieving; it consists in professing to believe what he does not believe.

It is impossible to calculate the moral mischief, if I may so express it, that mental lying has produced in society. When a man has so far corrupted and prostituted the chastity of his mind, as to subscribe his professional belief to things he does not believe, he has prepared himself for the commission of every other crime. He takes up the trade of a priest for the sake of gain, and, in order to qualify himself for that trade, he begins with a perjury. Can we conceive anything more destructive to morality than this?

I do not believe in the creed professed by the Jewish church, by the Roman church, by the Greek church, by the Turkish church, by the Protestant church, nor by any church that I know of. My own mind is my own church.'

Thomas Paine

Every national church or religion has established itself by pretending some special mission from God, communicated to certain individuals. The Jews have their Moses; the Christians their Jesus Christ, their apostles and saints; and the Turks their Mahomet; as if the way to God was not open to every man alike.

Each of those churches shows certain books, which they call revelation, or the Word of God. The Jews say that their Word of God was given by God to Moses face to face; the Christians say, that their Word of God came by divine inspiration; and the Turks say, that their Word of God (the Koran) was brought by an angel from heaven. Each of those churches accuses the other of unbelief; and, for my own part, I disbelieve them all.

As it is necessary to affix right ideas to words, I will, before I proceed further into the subject, offer some observations on the word revelation. Revelation when applied to religion, means something communicated immediately from God to man.

No one will deny or dispute the power of the Almighty to make such a communication if he pleases. But admitting, for the sake of a case, that something has been revealed to a certain person, and not revealed to any other person, it is revelation to that person only. When he tells it to a second person, a second to a third, a third to a fourth, and so on, it ceases to be a revelation to all those persons. It is revelation to the first person only, and hearsay to every other, and, consequently, they are not obliged to believe it.

It is a contradiction in terms and ideas to call anything a revelation that comes to us at second hand, either verbally or in writing. Revelation is necessarily limited to the first communication. After this, it is only an account of something which that person says was a revelation made to him; and though he may find himself obliged to believe it, it cannot be incumbent on me to believe it in the same manner, for it was not a revelation made to me, and I have only his word for it that it was made to him.

When Moses told the children of Israel that he received the two tables of the commandments from the hand of God, they were not obliged to believe him, because they had no other authority for it than his telling them so; and I have no other authority for it than some historian telling me so, the commandments carrying no internal evidence of divinity with them.

When I am told that the Koran was written in Heaven, and brought to Mahomet by an angel, the account comes to near the same kind of hearsay evidence and second hand authority as the former. I did not see the angel myself, and therefore I have a right not to believe it.

When also I am told that a woman, called the Virgin Mary, said, or gave out, that she was with child without any cohabitation with a man, and that her betrothed husband, Joseph, said that an angel told him so, I have a right to believe them or not: such a circumstance required a much stronger evidence than their bare word for it: but we have not even this; for neither Joseph nor Mary wrote any such matter themselves. It is only reported by others that they said so. It is hearsay upon hearsay, and I do not chose to rest my belief upon such evidence. [1]

The Enlightenment

Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed immaturity. Immaturity is the inability to use one's understanding without guidance from another. This immaturity is self imposed when its cause lies not in lack of understanding, but in lack of resolve and courage to use it without guidance from another. Sapere Aude! 1 "Have courage to use your own understanding!" - that is the motto of enlightenment.
